Argentinië & Brazilië - Iguazu / Iguaçu National Parks
Het Braziliaanse Iguaçu National Park deelt samen met het Argentijnse Nationaal park Iguazú een van 's werelds grootste en indrukwekkendste watervallen. De halfronde waterval in het hart van dit nationaal park is zo'n 80 meter hoog en heeft een diameter van 2700 meter. De waterval ligt op een basaltische (vulkanisch stollingsgesteente) lijn die de grens vormt tussen Argentinië en Brazilië. De vele watervallen in het Nationaal park Iguazú gelden als de meest spectaculaire van de wereld door hun enorme spuitende stromen water. Om de watervallen heen ligt een subtropisch regenwoud met meer dan 2000 soorten vaatplanten (planten met vaatbundels voor watertransport. In het lagere gedeelte groeien voornamelijk boomvarens, epifyten en lianen. In het hogere, vochtigere gedeelte groeien de Braziliaanse den met twee palmen, de Assaï palm, de wilde kokospalm en de imbuya. Het regenwoud is de thuisbasis van veel wilde dieren die typisch zijn voor deze streek: tapirs, reuzenmiereneters, brulapen, ocelots (pardelkatten), jaguars en kaaimannen.
The Brazilian Iguaçu National Park park shares with Iguazú National Park in Argentina one of the world’s largest and most impressive waterfalls. The semicircular waterfall at the heart of this site is some 80 m high and 2,700 m in diameter and is situated on a basaltic line spanning the border between Argentina and Brazil. Made up of many cascades producing vast sprays of water, it is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. The surrounding subtropical rainforest is home to many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. The clouds of spray produced by the waterfall are conducive to the growth of lush vegetation. The park has over 2,000 species of vascular plants and is home to the typical wildlife of the region: tapirs, giant anteaters, howler monkeys, ocelots, jaguars and caymans.
